Two Decades and Counting: Why We Relay

by Ryan White | Jul 14, 2017

The inaugural Relay For Life occurred in 1985 and was held in our hometown of Tacoma, Wash., at the University of Puget Sound. Since then it’s grown to an annual, global event supported by millions of people.

We’re proud to be a longtime supporter of the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. We attend and passionately fundraise on behalf of Relay For Life every year because it helps those affected by the battle against cancer. The funds raised go toward improving cancer survival, decreasing the incidence of cancer, and improving the quality of life for cancer patients and their caretakers. Whether it’s a ride to receiving treatment or providing help to navigate the healthcare system, Relay For Life helps those who are impacted by cancer, while honoring those who have lost their life to the disease.

Below we revisit some of the most rewarding moments in our own Relay For Life participation throughout the years.

2002: The Survivor Lap

The Survivor Lap, pictured below at the Relay For Life of Tacoma event in 2002 at Stadium High School, allows survivors and those currently affected by cancer to walk the track while being cheered on and supported by those in attendance. Columbia Bank team members enjoy kicking off Relay For Life with this touching tribute, a heartfelt reminder of why we continue to relay for a cure.

2005: Passing the Baton

In 2005, the Relay For Life of Tacoma experienced so much growth in popularity that it required a new venue at Mt. Tahoma High School. The change of venue accommodated an ever-expanding Team Columbia bank and countless supporters from around the community.

2008: Cheering for a Cure

When Team Columbia Bank wasn’t cheering on participants, it was busy raising money to support those impacted by cancer, raising a record-breaking amount of more than $20,000!

2009: Rocking the Relay

We rocked our way through the Cowlitz County Relay For Life in 2009. Participants from Team Columbia Bank dressed up as their favorite rock stars and brought guitars to keep the energy going during the event!

2010: Celebrating Life

With the goal of fighting cancer for the sake of celebrating more birthdays, members from Team Columbia Bank donned sashes sharing the month of their birthday as they walked the track at the Relay For Life of Tacoma in 2010.

2014: Breaking Records for Relays

Record-shattering fundraising continued for Team Columbia Bank in 2014, with a total of $35,847 raised bank-wide!

2017: Continuing the Tradition

More than two decades later, we’ve continued our support of Relay For Life by fundraising $37,868 in 2017! We look forward to continuing our efforts in the future to make a positive impact in the lives of those facing cancer.
