Columbia Bank team members face new challenges every day, and each of us goes the extra mile for our customers and community. Within our branches and departments are a few men and women who have gone the extra mile on behalf of our country as members of the United States Armed Forces. Columbia Bank would like to celebrate their service by sharing their stories and spotlighting the impact they have made to their respective jobs and communities. Join us as we honor the courage these individuals have demonstrated through service to our country.
Rick Cornelius | VP, Commercial Banking Prior to becoming a lender in the Commercial Banking department , Rick Cornelius served four years in the United States Marine Corps. “My time in the USMC provided me the confidence to engage in sincere relationship building and bridge the gap between the needs of the community and the needs of the bank,” Rick says of the valuable skills and lessons learned during his military service.
Sean Gibson | Private Banking Support Officer
Before joining our Private Banking Division, Sean Gibson devoted eight years between active duty and inactive reserves in the United States Navy. Stationed in Ft. Meade, Maryland, Sean developed abilities that would prepare him for the rest of life. “I was in military intelligence, working on computers and this new thing called the ‘world wide web.’ The Internet was just in its infancy and there were a lot of new and wonderful things going on.” Despite the fact he’s a banker now, Sean noted that he’s also IT support, a confidant and an advocate for his customers. “You are what your clients need you to be.”
Kim McDonough | AVP, Commercial Credit Analyst
After four years in the Air Force serving as a Cryptologic Linguist, Kim McDonough learned the importance of knowing how to work effectively with a diverse group of people. “When trying to relate to someone, it really helps to know where they are coming from. Not just geographically, but the experiences that have shaped their personality and lives,” she says of her military experience. Kim puts those skills to use today as an AVP, Commercial Credit Analyst .
Michael Wearne | VP, Environmental Risk Manager
Michael Wearne was a proud member of the United States Air Force for four years. His service took him to the Philippines where he supported the Clark Air Base Hospital and learned how to work on a team. “I learned in the military that we were focused on a common goal where you depended on others to achieve those goals and that lesson is true anywhere in life.”
Eric Welch | AVP, Branch Manager Four years in the United States Army took former 11 Bravo, Light Infantryman Eric Welch around the world before he joined the Bank as a Branch Manager. As he traveled from Join Base Lewis-McChord to places like Macedonia and Kosovo, he learned the importance of processes and procedures that he continues using today. “Being in the Army, or any branch of military service, is largely about scaling processes so tasks can be assigned, implemented and replicated – quickly. Military experience translates well to the banking world because rules and processes are everywhere.”
Chas Wilson | VP, Senior Financial Advisor with CB Financial Services* Chas Wilson learned the importance of discipline during his career in the United States Army lasting more than 24 years. Today he works as a Financial Advisor at CB Financial Services, working with customers to help them achieve and maintain their financial goals. “Anytime I start to feel bored or listless, I remember my days in the dirt and the dark and quickly snap out of it. My military service also taught me problem solving skills, which I use daily working for my clients.”
