A Fresh Take on Heart Health at Work

by Scott Abts | Sep 23, 2016

More than 700,000 people in the United States experience a heart attack each year. At Columbia Bank, we’re proud to support the heart health of our employees and communities by raising awareness and funds in partnership with the American Heart Association.

One of the unique ways we promote heart health and fundraise in support of AHA is by hosting an annual in-office farmers market. Employees donate items, such as fresh vegetables from their garden or home baked goods, which are sold to raise money as we look forward to participating in our local AHA Heart Walk.

The farmers market is comprised of fresh green produce packed with folic acid, such as broccoli and spinach. Folic acid is a vitamin commonly associated with reducing congenital heart defects.

If you’re looking to improve your own overall heart health, check out these simple tips to begin eating your way to a happy heart:

  • Visit your local farmers market for fresh seasonal produce filled with heart-healthy vitamins and minerals.
  • Prepare a fresh meal at home using low-sodium items such as brown rice, fresh vegetables and lean proteins.
  • Dining out? Scan the menu and consider choosing meals that are steamed, baked, grilled or roasted in lieu of fried or sautéed to save calories and overall fat content.
