Communities thrive because of the arts, and Columbia Bank is proud to sponsor Third Thursday in downtown Tacoma. The museums below all offer free admission on the third Thursday of each month. (Check museum location and hours for specific details.) Parents and children alike will enjoy the festivities—and learn a few things, too!
Tacoma Art Museum: Lauded internationally for its acclaimed collections, exhibits, and educational programs, Tacoma Art Museum should be on anyone’s short list when sightseeing downtown Tacoma, so the fact that admission is free on Third Thursday makes the trip even better! TAM’s collection tells a distinctly Northwest story set within the context of the broader history of the U. S. Be sure to catch Art, AIDS, America, a visual narrative of the country’s heartbreaking experience of the epidemic of the ‘80s and the effects the disease has/had on Americans. And don’t miss TAM’s recently-installed outdoor sculpture garden with a growing collection of dynamic, captivating sculptures.
Museum of Glass: The art of glassblowing has traditions throughout time and across the world, and the Northwest is often considered the glass art capital of the country. Museum cofounder and glass magician Dale Chihuly’s work is on display throughout the halls of the museum. Permanent collections include the majestic Fluent Steps, the dynamic Water Forest, and of course, Chihuly’s bold and beautiful Bridge of Glass. Two temporary exhibitions are on display currently: Healing in Flames, which demonstrates the power of art as a healing activity for soldiers returning from war; and Every Soil Bears Not Everything, an examination of the legacies of regional sculptors Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora C. Mace.
Washington State History Museum: Plan for plenty of time to experience the rich past of the Evergreen State. The largest exhibit is the Great Hall of Washington History, a massive year-round space that showcases what makes Washington so special and fascinating. Explore topics as diverse as native cultures, European exploration, American expansion, long-range geologies, modern life, and more. Their temporary exhibit, Arctic Ambitions: Captain Cook and the Northwest Passage, takes you on a journey into the adventures and ramifications of British Capt. James Cook’s years spent charting the Pacific Northwest. After that, take time to learn about the local talent living among us by visiting the Community Gallery, a space of rotating exhibits each created by various Washington state artists.
Children’s Museum of Tacoma: A new addition to Third Thursday, the Children’s Museum of Tacoma aims to delight and surprise every guest that walks through the doors. Each of its five thoughtfully curated “playscapes” allows kids to expand their horizons, discover new passions, and develop their natural creativities.
